People of Dayspring
The Role of Music at Dayspring
Music is a vital part of Worship at Dayspring. Music can inspire and
uplift. It can soothe and comfort. It can touch us in a way that nothing
else can. Music is a gift from God that enables both participants and
listeners to focus and be open to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Music
provides an unique outreach extending far beyond our Sanctuary doors.
Music is an exceptionally fulfilling way to serve the Lord, our church
and each other.
For more about the role of music in Dayspring's ministry, click
here.
Dayspring provides a wide variety of musical options for all ages.
After examining the following music ministries, please give careful
consideration to where you might be of best service. We are always happy
to welcome those desiring to unite with our musical family.
Celebration Singers
The Celebration Singers gives participants an opportunity to
praise the Lord in jubilant song! Directed by Michael Kelley,
this multi-generational group is ideal for those who prefer
singing more contemporary and Gospel-style music, as well as
more traditional pieces, and those who desire a less rigorous
rehearsal and service schedule.
Celebration Singers is open to all adults and High School
youth (9th - 12th grades). Music reading is not required,
but previous choral experience is a plus. In addition to
singing at the 9:00 Worship Service most weeks, the Celebration
Singers also lead special services Christmas Eve, Maundy
Thursday, Easter Sunday, and other Festival Services
throughout the year.
We'd love to share our gift of song with you. If you have
questions please contact
Rev. Kelley in the Music Ministry office.
Esperanza
Esperanza is Dayspring’s Youth Choir, open to all Jr. and Sr.
High youth (grades 7 through 12). Directed by Michael Kelley,
they sing in worship once a month, as well as special services,
such as Youth Sunday, Christmas Eve and Easter Sunrise.
Repertoire ranges from contemporary praise music, Gospel and
more traditional literature, providing exposure to many diverse
styles of choral music. Esperanza rehearses every Wednesday at
5:45 PM. For more information, please contact
Rev. Kelley
in the Music Ministry office.
Children's Choirs
Let your child express the music inside! A very special part
of Dayspring’s Music Ministry, our Children’s Choirs provide
an exciting and educational choir experience for children
3 years of age through 6th grade.
Directed by Penny Carpenter, the Genesis Choir (for grades 4
through 6) meets every Wednesday at 7:00 PM, and the Sunshine
Singers (for grades 1 through 3) Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
Please contact Ms. Carpenter for more information.
Our newest addition, The Cherub Choir (age 3
through Kindergarten), directed by Marla Naisant, meets Wednesdays
at 6:00 PM. These choirs are a special part of worship several times
a year. In addition, they lead the 6:00 PM Christmas Eve Service,
and join the combined Adult and Youth Choirs on Palm Sunday,
Thanksgiving Sunday, and other Festival Services throughout the year.
For more information please contact
Ms. Naisant.
Children’s choirs meet every Wednesday:
Cherub Choir (3 years old - Kindergarten) meets from 6-6:30 pm in the Adult Room.
Sunshine Singers (1st-3rd grade) meet from 6-6:30 pm in the Media Room.
Genesis Choir (4th-6th grade) meets from 7-7:45 pm in the Media Room.
Here are the Sunshine Singers at a recent service:
Handbell Choirs
Dayspring's English Handbell Choirs, under the direction
of Julie Hackmann, add a beautiful dimension to our Worship
Services. Our five-octave set of Malmark Handbells, as well
as our Handchimes, provide a challenging opportunity for those
who prefer to become a part of an instrumental ensemble.
The Dayspring Chimers, our Handbell Choir for High School
Youth and Adults (grade 9 and above) meets Tuesday evenings
at 5:45 PM. Daystar, our Adult Handbell Choir, follows at
7:00 PM. Both groups meet in the Choir Room.
Solid music reading abilities are required for DayStar, and
necessary for participation in the Dayspring Chimers. Each
Bell Choir performs every other month in Worship, as well
as in holiday and/or spring concerts. In addition to regular
participation, both choirs require alternates and substitute
ringers. For more information, please contact director
Ms. Hackmann.
Instrumental Music
Our Instrumental Music Ministry area is becoming more and
more important as a special part of our Festival Worship
Services. The Dayspring Brass accompanies the Chorale,
and provides a grandeur and brilliance to our Worship Services.
There are also needs throughout the year for additional
reed and string players.
Dayspring Chorale
The Dayspring Chorale is one of the premier choral organizations in the Valley.
Recognized internationally, the Chorale has been repeatedly featured at the
Salzburg Festival in Salzburg, Austria, as well as concerts and Masses in venues
such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, Il Duomo in Florence, Italy,
and St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Under the direction of L. Michael
Kelley, Dayspring's Director of Music Ministries, they continue to be
prominent both here in Tempe and throughout the desert southwest. If you love
fine choral music and can make a commitment to the high standards of performance
and service that membership in the Chorale requires, we'd love to have
you join us.
The Dayspring Chorale sings every week at the 10:30 Worship Service, with special
services during Advent and Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, and Vesper Services
throughout the year. Repertoire ranges from Broadway tunes and Spirituals, to
classic Choral literature and Masses by Bach and Mozart.
The Dayspring Chorale is strongly committed to service, both to our
church and our community. We are truly a family of caring friends who
feel fortunate to be able to "give back" just a small part of that with
which God has so richly blessed us.
Please join us. No audition is required, but some music reading skills are
helpful, if not essential. We meet every Wednesday evening from 7:30 PM to 9:00
PM. Childcare is always available. If you desire further information, please contact
Michael Kelley
in the Music Ministry office at 480-838-1446.
Dayspring Chorale European Tour
2011 Dayspring Chorale Tour Choir
To magnify any portion of the photo,
just float your cursor over the photo.
The Dayspring Chorale leaves Friday, July 1 on its 2011 European tour.
Kris Kroeger, Program Secretary and Youth Ministries Coordinator
at Dayspring (who will be traveling with the Chorale), has set up a website
dedicated to news, blogs and photos. We hope that various members of the
group will be posting their observations and impressions and photos during
the course of the tour, and you will be able to be a virtual participant
in the journey. You can get to the website and the blogs
several ways:
To go to the website, press the Chorale Tour button in the rightmost column
of this page (right below the bulletin). That button will remain
in place for the entirely duration of the tour.
You can then browse through the entire site (notice the Blog
and Photo Albums menu items at the top of the page).
If you want to skip the intro and go directly to the blog,

A Dayspring Chorale Performance
Sit back and enjoy an exquisite rendition by the Dayspring Chorale
of "We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace" by Moses Hogan:
Olde World Madrigal Feaste
On December 5th and 6th, Dayspring's Music Ministry presented an Olde World Madrigal Feaste,
a musical and culinary celebration of the Christmas Season.
The music was extraordinary, the viands were up to Tom Vetter's usual sky-high
standards, and the costumes were spectacular. We present this photo album
of the evening's celebration as a memento for those who were there either
as musicians or as attendees, and possibly to encourage those who did not attend
to think about doing so next Christmas.
Dayspring Festival of the Arts
Sculpture by Tom Oliver, local artist and Dayspring member
Members of Dayspring as well as members of the valley community
enjoyed The Dayspring Festival of the Arts on April 16 – 17.
Dayspring Minister of Music L. Michael Kelley organized the event and
said, "We appreciate the contributions of artists, committee members,
and volunteers that made this event a success. Thank you especially to
all of the artists who shared their time and talent. Their level of
talent and professionalism was phenomenal. They were first rate."
Kelley congratulated the Festival committee of Robert Smith, Larry Lathom,
Tom McLaughlin, John Alden, and Keith Lawson, as well as many volunteers.
The Festival Committee worked with Kelley to develop the concept of the
event and then followed up with all the details and tasks that needed to
be done. Volunteers, including Dayspring Chorale members, made sure
artists had what they needed. Jeffrey Reynolds designed and built the
beautiful and informative website. United Methodist Outreach Ministries
(UMOM) supplied the food for the Friday night dinner.

Those who attended the Festival were well-rewarded and left with the
hope that this "celebration of the arts, alive and flourishing in our
community," might become a permanent fixture on the Dayspring calendar.

Thanksgiving at Dayspring
Thanksgiving and Advent are a time for recognition, appreciation and celebration of tradition.
One of the great traditions at Dayspring is the special music at special times of the year - "Hosanna, Hosanna"
on Palm Sunday, Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" on Easter Sunday, and of course, the beautiful candlelight
service on Christmas Eve.
But nothing is more special than Thanksgiving Sunday, when all of Dayspring's choirs join with the
Bell Choirs and the Dayspring Brass in presenting "The First Song of Isaiah," by Jack Noble White.
Based on Isaiah 12, the chorus never fails to stir:
"Surely it is God who saves me;
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,
and He will be my Savior."

Christmas Eve at Dayspring
One of the most meaningful worship services of the year at Dayspring
is the Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service at 11:00pm.
Each person entering the sanctuary is presented with a small candle.
After a service of lessons and carols and music by the Dayspring
Chorale and Brass, and after the entire congregation shares communion,
the ushers light the candles of those at the end of each row, and the light
spreads from person to person until it fills the whole sanctuary.
As the candles are being lit and held aloft, The Dayspring Chorale sings:
Peace, peace, peace on earth,
And good will to all.
This is a time for peace.
This is a time for joy.
Now let us all sing together
Of peace, peace, peace on earth.
The congregation joins with the familiar carol, Silent Night,
creating a beautiful duet with the Chorale as it continues the
original melody of Peace, Peace.
Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright
round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild,
sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight;
glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born!
Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light;
radiant beams from thy holy face with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Silent night, holy night, wondrous star, lend thy light;
with the angels let us sing, Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born!
