People of Dayspring
Our Purpose
To declare the centrality of Christ in every man’s life
To promote the spiritual growth of men through effective discipleship
To model the servant leadership of Christ in our daily lives
Meetings begin with breakfast, music and a devotional followed by a short program.
Fellowship and getting better acquainted with other men of DaySpring is our focus.
We also host a men’s retreat that is a weekend of good fellowship, excellent food,
leisure time, humor and stimulating discussions. The Men’s Retreat is now in its
7th year...you will not want to miss it! For more information, contact Ric Garza

Lee Cook Memorial Recognition
On Saturday, December 4, the Dayspring United Methodist Men
recognized Tom Vetter with The Lee Cook Memorial Recognition
certificate for his valuable and continuing service to
Dayspring United Methodist Church.
The Lee Cook Memorial Recognition was created by the Dayspring
United Methodist Men to honor the unselfish service of Jesse Lee
Cook, who established his family's membership at Dayspring in 1990
and was active in the church as well as being a founder and president
of the Dayspring United Methodist Men. Lee became very active in
the United Methodist Men's Conference in Nashville, serving as its
president and extensively traveled to speak, teach, counsel and help
wherever needed. Lee was always a very positive person, having had
a wonderful, very productive and rewarding life and the Lee Cook
Memorial Recognition significantly commemorates the embodiment of
Lee's spirit and Christian devotion.
Lee was a teacher in the Phoenix Roosevelt School District for
thirty-six years, Parks and Recreation Director, active in Little
League and National Guard office for thirty-eight years, ultimately
retiring with the rank of Captain. Lee had an intense love of sports
and refereed high school and college games, capping off his officiating
career refereeing the New Year's Day Rose Bowl in 1984. In 1994 Lee was
inducted into the Football Hall of Fame. Lee was born in Phoenix in
1929 and after a long struggle with cancer died in 2007. Even knowing
the end of his life was near, Lee never departed from the joy of giving,
always greeting a visitor with his usual smile, words of encouragement,
the wisdom of his advice and the love of a brother and friend.
Lee personified what everyone should seek in our voyage on this earth
– good humor, freely giving of our talents, and fervent caring for our
brethren.
It was in this spirit that Tom Vetter was chosen to receive the First
Annual Lee Cook Memorial Recognition.
Tom Vetter accepts the Lee Cook Memorial
Recognition from Martha Cook, widow of Lee Cook, as Tom's wife Debby
looks on. Click here to enlarge.
Tom Vetter is a long-time member of Dayspring who has freely
volunteered his time and talents over the past sixteen years
in Dayspring's kitchen (and continues to do so - he was called out
of the kitchen to receive the award) and became known to members
as "The Master Chef" whenever the church required food preparation
for outreach programs, weddings, lunches, elaborate dinners and
fund raisers. He can often be found in the early hours of the
morning, planning and preparing memorable meals for large affairs
of one hundred or more.
Tom's mission is one that has certainly benefited and continues to
benefit Dayspring and the many members who have enjoyed the
delicious results of his efforts.

United Methodist Men Complete a Great Year!
With our Dinner and Song event on May 8, UMM completed our
church year activities until after the summer break. It was an exciting and rewarding
year for the more than 114 men (and Dr. Jane) who participated in our far
reaching activities and ministries during this time.
Activities included our monthly meetings with great food, fellowship, devotionals
and programs. The annual Men's Fall Retreat at Mingus Mountain brought a record
40 men for a wonderful weekend together. Our ongoing service and ministry included
support of the kitchen with participation in painting and purchase of a new
oven and dishwasher. The Toolbox Ministry continued its service to those in need
of small home maintenance repairs. We sponsored youth to Africa, boy scout projects,
joined with the Dayspring Youth to put on the annual church picnic, and took
the lead with the Music Ministry to organize and bring to reality the first Dayspring
Festival of the Arts. We are supporting the Patio Renovation project, and we closed
the year with a great celebration at our annual Dinner and Song which this year
drew our largest participation ever with over 100 guests enjoying a Western Cookout
on the church patio.
Next year, however, is just around the corner and hopefully if you were part
of UMM this year, you'll continue to support it in the fall. If you didn't get a chance
to participate, have we got an opportunity for you!
Already scheduled for the fall are these dates (Mark your calendars):
Monthly Meetings on October 2, November 6 and December 4 in the Adult
Room beginning with Tom Vetter's breakfast.
An All Church Golf outing at Ahwatukee Lakes on Saturday, September 11
Our annual Fall Men's Retreat at Mingus Mountain October 22-24.
AND MUCH, MUCH, MORE.....Plan to join us!
Thanks to all for the participation and support this year!
