Faculty and top students from the ASU School of Music join David Schildkret and the Dayspring Choirs in a one-time concert at Dayspring UMC on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 2:00p.m. to benefit hurricane victims in the Bahamas.
Performers include American-born international opera star Gordon Hawkins. Acclaimed for his “… penetrating, poised baritone of uncommon power and malleability” (Opera Today, August, 2019), he has been called “one of the world’s leading dramatic baritones.” Mr. Hawkins was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Luciano Pavarotti International Vocal Competition, and won the Washington National Opera’s “Artist of the Year” award. This is the only opportunity for Arizonans to see him perform before he leaves next month to sing at Chicago’s renowned Lyric Opera. When he’s not performing at the world’s great opera houses, Mr. Hawkins teaches gifted young singers at ASU.
Acclaimed soprano Carole FitzPatrick, pianist Russell Ryan, and many others from ASU’s roster of great vocalists and musicians will join Mr. Hawkins for a diverse and exciting evening of music in the 750 seat sanctuary at Dayspring United Methodist Church, 1365 E. Elliot Road, Tempe, Arizona, 85254.
David Schildkret, Director of Choral Activities at Arizona State University since 2002 and new Director of Music Ministries at Dayspring, will lead the Dayspring Choirs.
The beneficiary, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), is the global humanitarian aid/emergency relief arm of the United Methodist Church. 100% of donations go to specific projects such as Dorian relief in the Bahamas. Donations do not cover marketing or administrative overhead, which is paid by the United Methodist Church.
When disaster strikes, UMCOR is often the first to put planes on the runway and distribute emergency supplies. When the situation is under control, they bring in an army of trained volunteers to begin the recovery, including distribution of tools and supplies, and structural rehabilitation.
Professional child care is offered during the concert at no cost. The concert is not ticketed. Donations will be accepted at the door or can be submitted online here (please make sure the selected Fund is UMCOR).
